unnamed-5PRESS RELEASE – Digicel St. Lucia is yet again investing in  health and wellness awareness across the country; this time through a new partnership with the Northern Long Distance Walking Group, for their fifth annual ‘Independence Challenge Walk’.

The ‘round the island walk’ is slated for Wednesday February 21st, 2017 to commemorate with St. Lucia’s 38th Independence Anniversary.

At a press conference held on Tuesday February 14th, 2017 at the offices of Michel’s Electrical in Corinth Gros Islet, members of the Northern Long Distance Walking Group enlightened guests and media personnel on the full details of the event. The walk will commence at the grounds of Massy Store Cul D’ Sac on February 21st from 3:30 pm, with walkers proceeding via the west coast and continue via the east coast, to end on the William Peter Boulevard in Castries on Independence Day, February 22nd.

Since its inception in 2013, the ‘round the island walk’ as it is most popularly known, has increasingly grown in popularity and participation each year.

Under the mantra ‘Healthy Living and Personal Discipline’ the Northern Long Distance Walking Group continues to inspire many to cultivate  a greater sense of self investment and  raise awareness on the importance of healthy practices and maintaining daily routines which helps one live a longer healthier life. Walkers include a combination of men, women and young people alike. In 2016 the Independence Challenge saw participation of 150 persons and anticipates increased numbers for 2017.

Addressing the gathering at Tuesday’s press conference Digicel representative and Marketing and Communications Executive, Miss Louise Victor spoke on the company’s support of the venture. “Digicel believes in supporting initiatives of this nature which helps foster a more health conscious nation.  The plague of diseases like Diabetes and Hypertension on our health care system and by extension our economy, is heart breaking.

These diseases are lifestyle diseases and are very much preventable once we decide to make small changes. Making a decision to walk for thirty minutes a day or general exercise daily and altering one’s diet can have significant impact on one’s wellness. For us at Digicel we are beyond elated to be a partner, of such an extraordinary movement which touches the lives of thousands of St. Lucians. “

Digicel is also supporting the Mon Repos Youth and Sports Council for their annual Independence Road Relay scheduled for Sunday February 19th from 7am. The relay celebrates its 28th year and continues to attract both regional and international participation. The relay route is from the Mamiku Gardens to Helene, Derisseaux and culminates at the Wenn Playing Field in Mon Repos.

Digicel wishes all St. Lucians a safe and happy 38th Independence Anniversary and wishes the organizing committees the best of success with all independence activities.
