Choiseul Community welcomes new Choiseul Secondary School

378b36bc-58da-44ca-8b86-18a8266a7358PRESS RELEASE – On Saturday 16th April 2016, the Ministries of Education, Human Resource Development and Labour; Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport and the Department of Planning and National Development and held a Stakeholders meeting with the Choiseul Community to present the plans and designs for the Construction of two new school Blocks for the Choiseul Secondary School.

The New Choiseul Secondary School Construction project includes the construction of two (2) Three (3) story blocks to accommodate 12 classrooms and a number of specialized instruction rooms and science laboratories, along with washrooms and a sick bay. The new school buildings have also been designed to facilitate access for persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the Stakeholders meeting, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport – Mrs. Allison A. Jean disclosed that in designing the new school buildings, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport adopted the “Build Back Better” approach to this project, as an adoption measure to climate change. She expressed optimism that the procurement of both a Contractor and Supervising Consultant would be completed in May, and the Ministry was hopeful that construction activities would commence in June, thus allowing for maximization of the closure of school for the summer holidays.

The District Education Officer for the Choiseul Region, Ms. Kay Nicholas expressed elation that this project, which the community have been eagerly looking forward to is now at an advanced stage. Ms. Kay Nicholas also thanked the school administration, teachers, students and parents for the patience and understanding exercised over a number of years, as was evidenced by the provision of the best possible service and good results under conditions considered less than ideal.

The Choiseul community expressed gratitude to the Government of St. Lucia for its efforts to provide modern educational facilities, and pledged to cooperate to ensure that the project is executed smoothly and efficiently.

The Choiseul Secondary School Rehabilitation project is an integral part of the Governments’ National Investment Plan. Funding is provided by the World Bank under the Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project. Construction activity is expected to be completed within 12 months.
