GIS – The National Authorizing Office has formally solicited bids for the rehabilitation and upgrade of agricultural feeder roads in several communities in the south of the island, under a project funded by the European Union (EU).
Agricultural roads in Bois Canon, Micoud; Morne Cayenne, Vieux Fort; Cardi/Compare, Dennery; and Derache, Soufriere will all be repaired under the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM) project in order to aid the development of Saint Lucia’s vital agricultural sector.
The goal of the project is to improve the motorability of roads used by farmers in the affected areas. This will help consolidate the gains made in the agricultural sector in recent years, and improve access by farmers to their farms, particularly those who continue in the banana sector.
The Government of Saint Lucia has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to bolstering local banana cultivation. Bananas remain the island’s main export crop, accounting for approximately 20 percent of all export earnings.
Financing is being provided to the Government of Saint Lucia at a cost of EC$37 million under the EU Agricultural Transformation Program.
