(PRESS RELEASE VIA SNO) – Described as “a small project with a big impact” residents of Cedars and Sunbilt gathered together on Sunday February 18, 2018, to formally declare the opening of the community’s new bus shelter.
The previous shelter had served the residents for years and had outlived its usefulness.
Addressing the gathering at the unveiling of the shelter, Parliamentary Representative for Castries North, Hon Stephenson King, noted the quality of workmanship that went into the construction of the facility.
“Normally” he said, “bus shelters are constructed standing on four poles with a roof that barely provides shelter if it rains heavily. In this case, the contractor (Cyril Jeremie) has gone out of his way to build the facility in manner yet to be seen, demonstrating a level of pride in his community. This facility does not only provide shelter from the elements, but also offers residents, particularly the elderly in the community, comfortable sitting whilst they wait,” King noted.
The parliamentary Representative implored residents to ensure that the bus shelter was kept in pristine condition. He cautioned against the temptation “to use the facility for commercial activities” and suggested that everyone, including young males in the community should serve to protect the facility and if necessary the residents using the bus shelter.
Beyond the construction of the bus shelter and in keeping with promises made, Mr King pointed to other projects that were recently completed and highlighted pipeline projects earmarked to benefit the residents of Cedars and Sunbilt.
“Recently, the Government of Saint Lucia, through established protocols, completed much needed retaining walls in the lower Sunbilt area. We are also in the process of minimizing the risks to residents who have complained about robberies and attempted burglaries in a particular section of the Cedars Road,” the Castries North Member of Parliament (MP) told the well-attended gathering.
The MP revealed that among the other projects that residents are expected to benefit from are the construction of additional parking area, a new garbage shoot, and a much anticipated Multi-purpose Complex which should, in addition to a Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), will house courts to facilitate basketball, netball and small goals soccer.
The mini ceremony was punctuated with entertainment provided by Anthony Jn Baptiste, aka “Cocky”, who thrilled the audience with several up-beat songs.
A highlight of the afternoon’s session was the honoring of senior citizen Mildred Plumber. In her nineties, Plumber was honored for her long-standing service to community and for being a model parent.
The Parliamentary Representative also received a plaque for dedication to community building.
