contractorsWith the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season already underway, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Department of Physical Planning Hildreth Lewis has urged property owners to adhere to building codes, because failing to do so could put them and the country at risk of various social and economic disadvantages.

Lewis said that individuals who build against the advice of planning authorities and competent agencies put themselves in danger of the full impact of natural disasters and climate change.

“At the same time [it] puts the nation, the state, in a bit of a difficult position when we have to come to their rescue and provide resources to help them rehabilitate their lives and property,” he said.

“The issue of climate change is a real reminder of the sometimes perilous nature of our existence as small island states. I mean, we’re surrounded by water and what climate change brings with it, I think, has negative potential impacts on small islands like us,” he said.

Statistics from independent researchers show that Saint Lucia recorded over 1,250 landslides in 2011, mainly as a result of Hurricane Tomas. The island is also prone to flash flooding which is a major concern for the Castries Basin and Bexon community.

There is an ongoing review of the region’s building codes through the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States’ (OECS) Global Climate Change Alliance Project (GCCA).

The Physical Planning Department provides assistance to the GCCA in that regard.
